Report: Greener energy policies will create more Midwest jobs

One week after a report found Wisconsin ranked 13th in the nation in green jobs, a new report projects the state would add another 11,500 jobs if it adopted more aggressive policies supporting renewable energy and energy efficiency.
The Union of Concerned Scientists report concludes that the Midwest would add 87,500 jobs by 2030 if all of the Midwest states implemented a series of policies advocated by the Midwestern Governors Association during an energy summit at the Pfister Hotel nearly four years ago.
Policies promoting green energy aren’t in focus given the recession and the Republican landslide in last November’s elections changed control of the Legislature and elected Republican Scott Walker as governor.
The report, “A Bright Future for the Heartland,” modeled the impact of policies that would set a 30% renewable electricity standard for Midwest states by 2030. Accompanying that would be aggressive energy efficiency policies that aim to reduce energy use by 2% a year beginning in 2015.

It's no secret there's a worldwide trend of jobs being created in the green industry. Toronto, Examiner.com Finance Reporter, Thomas Su, says for some cities, green companies now contribute more than 50% of the economies. Here are ten good strategies Su put together for finding jobs in the green industries:
1. Most jobs are not advertised - similar to other industries, the majority of jobs are not advertised unless the company is setting up a big new operation and require a lot of people from the public. In most cases, the company has a “career” section to collect resumes from candidates, and most of them already have extensive database of future candidates - so, as a job seeker, your job is to find these companies and basically register your interest with them.
2. LinkedIn - LinkedIn is very effective tool to find job opportunities, it is also a useful tool for you to connect with recruitment agents, executive placement agents and recruitment websites. Register your interest with these companies, and also post your resume on these groups and forums.
3. Go and check out Green/Cleantech investment venture capital companies’ websites - check out their portfolio companies, as these are often the companies that are looking to grow their workforce immediately. You can also try to career opportunities with cleantech venture capital companies, many of them are also helping their portfolio companies to recruit the right candidates.
4. Check out public listed companies on different stock exchanges - the most popular exchanges are NYSE, Nasdaq, TSX, LSE and also Germany’s Deutsche Borse (which has many international companies). You can find out a lot of information about these companies, also their locations, and submit your resume with them.
5. Check out the portfolio companies held by mutual funds or ETFs - this is a similar strategy as to Point 3 (venture capital portfolio companies), but check out the popular mutual funds, they will have their holdings public available through their annual reports - this is a good way to find leads.
6. Write a green-blog, I have 2 green blogs, and they have generated so much interest and traffic from green companies worldwide - including frequent job opportunities. Blog is a good way for you to connect with potential employers, through your blog, they get to know your personality, knowledge and inspiration - it is an excellent way to develop career opportunities.

7. Check out university commercialization programs - many universities have their own commercialization teams to develop in-house opportunities. These companies are partially funded by universities’ grants and other programs. Universities can also be considered as potential employers in the green industries, there are positions relating to R&D, business development and commercialization.
8. Consider utilities companies - These are usually large employers, some of them are Government entitles while others are semi-government or private entities. There is a global change in utilities & power generation infrastructure at moment, and this is likely to last over next 2 decades. These upgrades and changes are creating new technical and business related jobs such as social responsibility officers, environmental impact assessors and marketing professionals.
9. Consider environmental engineering services companies - We have mentioned several times that environmental services firms are the sector to watch when comes to job creation. They require both technical and non-technical jobs. Hot sectors at moment are soil remediation, site remediation, green energy planning, air pollution management and water management professionals.
10. Consider Government opportunities - This is certainly a growth area while many other government departments are cutting down their funding. There are 2 ways to approach about Government positions - you can apply as a full-time position, or you can approach them as a contractor, the latter is an effective strategy to get your foot into the door first.

Some elements of that work are still on the Green Jobs Strategist's plate: implementing on-bill financing legislation, pursuing job standards, evaluating the success and impacts of various elements of GJGNY policy, and supporting the development of GJGNY-inspired strategies in other states. Beyond GJGNY, emerging areas of work likely include:
